"Jožef Stefan" Institute

The leading Slovenian research institution was named after the renowned Slovenian physicist Jožef Stefan, after whom the Stefan law of blackbody radiation is also named. Since its inception, it has focused on research activities in nuclear physics and the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

In 1966, the first reactor in Slovenia was built at the Reactor Centre in Podgorica near Ljubljana. It is intended for training experts, research with neutrons and gamma rays, and the production of radioactive isotopes.

Knowledge is used for the construction and maintenance of nuclear power plants, the education of nuclear experts, and in solving interdisciplinary research problems such as radiological monitoring, environmental radiation measurements, materials research, safety analysis, energy storage, environmental conservation, and medicine.
